In March I travelled to the city of Guanajuato to take a four-day course called “Exploring Encaustic Painting and the Color of Mexico”. The instructor, Jeffrey Hirst, is a Chicago-based artist who has worked in encaustic for many years. The luminosity he manages to achieve in his work is captivating and something I wanted to delve into more.
Guanajuato is an amazingly colourful and walkable city. Many of the streets are too narrow for cars and there is an extensive network of tunnels that allows cars to travel the city, beneath pedestrians’ feet. Walking the city felt like exploring the entire palette of Mexico.
